Glimpse of the accomplishments of iHack 5.0

Another chapter of the success story of the iHack series unfolded on the 26th & 27th of October 2019 as iHack 5.0 at the University of Colombo School of Computing Premises. This 24-hour inter-university software development hackathon was organized by the ISACA Student Group of the University of Colombo School of Computing for the 5th consecutive time in order to provide students a platform to explore innovative ideas and collaboratively implement software solutions. This hackathon was conducted under the theme ‘Think – Code – Build’ providing students an opportunity to demonstrate & improve their software development & problem – solving skills. Once the initial registrations for iHack 5.0 opened, teams from different state & private universities submitted their proposals which were then reviewed by industrial experts.
Once all proposals were reviewed the top 15 teams were selected to compete at iHack 5.0.

Team registrations were opened at 8:00 am on the 26th of October where they received t-shirts, name tags & souvenirs. The event commenced with dignitaries lighting the traditional oil lamp followed by the address by Professor K. P. Hewagamage, Director of UCSC. Subsequently, the gathering was addressed by Mr. Sithira Wanniarachchi, President of the ISACA Sri Lanka Chapter along with an address by Mr. Ruwan Aluthgedara, Chief Technical Officer representing DirectFN, the platinum sponsor of iHack 5.0.

The teams were allocated team numbers after drawing lots and thereby began the challenges to acquire the title. After a couple of hours of discussion & coding, these teams had to prepare for the pre-pitch presentation submission where the competitors had to briefly elaborate their ideas and implementation. Afterward, a code review session was conducted by the esteemed judges from DirectFN where each team was visited in order to review their code and inquire about their progress while guiding them by providing invaluable feedback & suggestions. Once the deadline for the submission was reached, the competitors presented their pre-pitch presentations. This round was judged by industrial experts from DirectFN, ISACA Sri Lanka Chapter members and lecturers from the University of Colombo School of Computing.

In the midst of the strenuous hackathon, all participants were provided with refreshments along with a separate entertainment area where they were able to relax and engage in fun activities such as playing cards or carrom, watching a movie along with a separate area for taking photographs to ensure that all participants were re-energized to continue with their tasks and achieve their targets.

The next morning, all teams had to face the semi-final rounds in order to determine the finalists. The renowned judge board for this round comprised of Mr. Ruwan Aluthgedara – Chief Technical Officer at DirectFN, Mr. Janaka S Rathnayake – Associate Software Architect at DirectFN, Mr. Priyabashitha L.P – Tech Lead at DirectFN, Mr. Ayoma Wijethunga – Technical Lead at WS02, Mr. Malinda Fernando – Assistant Manager , IT at Pyxle International, Mr. Sithira Wanniarachchi – President of the ISACA Sri Lanka Chapter and Mr. Rangana Jayashanka, Mr. Tharindu Wijethilaka, Mr. Shavindra Wickramathilake – Lecturers at the University of Colombo of School of Computing. After the conclusion of this round, 5 teams were selected to compete in the finals. The finalists comprised of Team Code Red from the University of Moratuwa, Team Alpha Pack from the University of Moratuwa, Team ODIGOS from the University of Moratuwa, Team Testing123 from the University of Peradeniya & Team Trek from the University of Sri Jayawardenepura.

After the final encounter of iHack 5. 0, Team ODIGOS from the University of Moratuwa emerged as the winners of the competition followed by Team Testing123 from the University of Peradeniya who acquired the position as 1st runners; up while Team Alpha Pack from the University of Moratuwa secured the 2nd runners’ up position. All participants received certificates while all finalists received gifts for their achievements. Winners received cash prizes along with certificates for their incredible performance.

A big thank you goes out to the past members of UCSC ISG who became a part of this hackathon by providing their invaluable experiences & guidance throughout the event. iHack 5.0 successfully concluded with the commitment & dedication of every individual who contributed in one way or another. The ISACA student group of the University of Colombo School of Computing hopes that IHack 6.0 will be the next trailblazing event to be marked on the 2020 calendar.
