What is ISACA?

ISACA® is an independent, non-profit association that advocates for professionals involved in information security, assurance, risk management and governance. It engages in the development, adoption and use of globally accepted, industry-leading knowledge and practices for information systems development and governance. Formerly known as the Information Systems Audit and Control Association, ISACA now goes by its acronym only, to reflect the broad range of IT governance professionals it serves.

ISACA was incorporated in 1969 by a small group of individuals who recognized a need for a centralized source of information and guidance in the growing field of auditing controls for computer systems. Today, ISACA serves 140,000 professionals in 180 countries. Each chapter has one or more student branches under its purview. ISACA offers educational events that meet the needs of all IT professionals. From face-to-face conferences, including its flagship International Conference and the global Computer Audit, Control and Security (CACS) conferences, and Training Weeks, to e-Learning and On-site Training, ISACA is committed to providing its members and constituents with the resources they need to keep their professional skills and knowledge up-to-date.

ISACA provides practical guidance, benchmarks and other effective tools for all enterprises that use information systems. Through its comprehensive guidance and services, ISACA defines the roles of information systems governance, security, audit and assurance professionals worldwide. The COBIT framework and the CISA, CISM, CGEIT and CRISC certifications are ISACA brands respected and used by these professionals for the benefit of their enterprises.

UCSC ISACA Student Group

UCSC ISACA Student Group is the first ever ISG (ISACA Student Group) under the ISACA Sri Lankan Chapter. It gained official recognition from the ISACA International Headquarters (located in USA) on 10th December 2013, as a 39th ISACA Student Group in the entire world with authorization to use the ISACA Student Group logo on their communications, web pages, advertising and events. The aim of the group is to encourage education beyond classroom learning by facilitating students to network & learn from each other and connect with a supportive group of professionals. It gives students the opportunity to familiarize with ISACA by interacting with professionals at events sponsored by the university and the local chapter. More specifically, the objectives of the ISG are the same as listed in the Professional Chapter and the Association’s by-laws:

  • To promote the education of and help expand the knowledge and skills of its members in the interrelated fields of IT governance, IS audit, security, control and assurance;
  • To encourage a free exchange of IT governance, IS audit, security, control and assurance techniques, approaches, and problem solving by its members;
  • To promote adequate communication to keep members abreast of current events in IT governance, IS audit, security, control and assurance that can be beneficial to them and their employers;
  • To communicate to management, auditors, universities and to IS professionals the importance of establishing controls necessary to ensure proper IT governance and the effective organization and utilization of IT resources; and
  • To promote the Association’s professional certifications and IT governance.

From the founding team, Mr. Shujan Suntharalingam was appointed as the first President of UCSC ISACA Student Group. During this period UCSC ISG Official Website was successfully launched in conjunction with the ISG Community Group on Facebook, by the Board. Furthermore, few Workshops and Code Lab sessions were conducted in order to create awareness on key topics such as Information Security, Assurance, Risk Management and Governance among University undergraduates.

ISG started to become more popular among the University community during last five years with 02 major initiatives – Sri Lanka’s first ever Information Security themed Hackathon ‘iHack’, which was followed by Cyber Security Conference ‘iFest’. In addition, there were many other Workshops and Meet-ups organized by the ISG Board in collaboration with ISACA Sri Lanka Chapter.
